Born and raised in Venezuela, Mercedes moved to the United States in 2010. Initially a telecommunications engineer, Mercedes completed college in 2008 while in Venezuela before moving to the United States. It was a courageous move to leave her home country to start a new life and learn a new language and culture.
Mercedes recalls the transition, “When I moved to America, I didn’t know English, so I wasn’t able to get good jobs. Therefore, I had to start from scratch, and I was blessed to find a job as a housekeeper with an awesome family who taught me everything about the American culture and the language. After one year, I moved on my own and started doing inside sales for a manufacturing company and investing in long-term rental properties.”
While establishing her career, Mercedes met her husband, Jason, in 2012 and married in 2013. The couple has two beautiful daughters, Zoey and Anna.
A determined, hard worker, Mercedes found herself intrigued with real estate when her family started investing in long-term rental properties in 2012. Her drive to do more in the industry led her to obtain her real estate license in 2016 to grow their rental portfolio and be instrumental in finding great deals. As well, Dockery saw an essential need for a trustworthy REALTOR® to work with the Hispanic population. With her native language and understanding of the culture, it was a given that Mercedes would be a true asset to those needing her help finding their dream home or wanting to expand investment opportunities.
Initially starting in a small firm, Mercedes learned the ropes, especially about the NACA process, and developed relationships with many clients. In 2020, she joined Exp Realty, LLC and has been happily serving clients there to present.
With five years under her belt as a REALTOR®, Mercedes has successfully achieved a career volume of over $36 million. Her accolades include ranking number 94 in the country and number 18 in the South East (Alabama, DC, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico) within The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals® (NAHREP®). The Top 250 Latino Agents Award recognizes the industry’s leading Hispanic real estate agents and brokers whose hard work and dedication have led them to close an outstanding number of transactions in an effort to increase the rate of sustainable Hispanic homeownership in communities across the country.
Reflecting on her successes, Mercedes knows the struggles it can take to make it in the industry: “The biggest challenge I have faced in my life was to migrate to another country when I was 23 years old without knowing the language and the culture. I had to quit my engineering career and a comfortable lifestyle provided by my family due to the political turmoil that my country has been going through. I moved to Charlotte in 2010, and I didn’t know anyone here. It was hard to find a good job because I wasn’t able to communicate well enough, so I had to start with low-paying jobs. However, that didn’t stop me from wanting to be successful. I have always been an entrepreneur, and real estate has allowed me to help others reach their goals as well as my own goals to bless my family.”
Having worked extremely hard to make her mark in real estate, Mercedes is quick to help others as well. She makes it a priority to help other REALTORS® who are starting their careers by cutting out the guesswork and sharing successful techniques that have worked for her through the years.
When asked about advice to up-and-coming REALTORS®, Dockery shares, “The real estate world is changing by the minute with all the technology available – we have to evolve and keep ourselves updated. I’ve learned that a REALTOR® who doesn’t adapt to the new technology will not survive. We have to develop at the same pace as the market. I am here to help anyone who wants support. It does not matter how many years you have been in business; you need to partner with someone who cares and provides value.”
Dockery especially loves to help first-time homebuyer clients who thought they were not going to be able to buy a home for their families.
She notes, “It’s not just the commission check or comparing myself with other top-producing agent numbers, but genuinely caring about the people who trust you with their biggest investment. I love to grow my rental property portfolio, keep helping buyers and sellers invest in their future, and be a platform for agents who want to be successful.”
In her spare time, Mercedes loves to spend time with her family at their beach condo, traveling to new places and discovering new restaurants – she has a goal to see all of the seven wonders of the world! Mercedes has a passion for volunteering with the Nephrotic Syndrome Foundation as the family’s 3-year-old daughter was recently diagnosed this year with nephrotic syndrome.
Driven. Enterprising. Customer Focused. Balanced.
Mercedes is relentless in her pursuits, as well as keeping a work-family ratio in perspective. “I don’t stop until I get what I want. However, after COVID hit, I have come to value health and family more than working 24/7, because you never know what can happen to you, and the money won’t be able to fix it. I am developing more passive income to be able to enjoy more time with my family.”
