REALTOR®. Director of Culture for Costello REI. Accredited Buyer Representative. Pricing Strategy Advisor.
Nelvia grew up in the Midwest, primarily spending the most time in Chicago. In Chicago’s Chi-town, she met her husband, Todd, and started her career in sales. The couple then moved to San Francisco, where Nelvia worked for several years in business to business sales and marketing with companies such as engineering design software’s Autodesk. Nelvia and Todd currently have two beautiful children—Madison (5), Maxwell (22 months), and a Malshi named Sasha.
“The universe magically positioned me to be in the driver’s seat as my husband and I built our first home,” Nelvia says in regards to the start of her real estate career. A product of three major relocations, and experiencing the pitfalls and nuances of building new construction, the inspiration to pursue a career in real estate naturally evolved for Nelvia.
Since her first real estate transaction with Costello REI in October 2017, Nelvia lit a fire within herself. She is now running a successful portfolio of clients, as well as serving as the firm’s Director of Culture, where she has already helped pioneer many company events, projects, and activities in partnership with leadership to create an atmosphere of inclusion and foster a positive experience for Costello’s brokers.
To date, Nelvia has accumulated a total career volume of $25 million in client transactions and went on to earn the 2018 Significant Impact Award by Costello Real Estate & Investments, which is a distinguished honor awarded at the firm for an individual that exemplifies strong leadership skills, works as a team player, and contributes to the culture—all the while being great at real estate. Consistently on the leaderboard, Nelvia is still receiving top producer recognitions including #2 Agent of Q1 2020, Top 10 Top Producer numerous times, and more.
“I have been so fortunate to be mentored by a couple of local mega agents to learn best practices and the essential fundamentals of real estate,” Nelvia tells us. “I’ve watched the Costello’s firm grow from one office with 20 agents to multiple offices with 350 agents in just three years! I would not be where I am today without this critical coaching experience—paired with the invaluable nuggets of wisdom John and Natalie Costello have shared with me over the years.”
Always looking for ways to “pay it forward,” Nelvia enjoys working with buyers of limited financial resources to help change their outcome and financial narratives—with the cumulative goal to create a legacy of first-generation financial success and growth, which will ultimately lead to stronger outcomes in minority communities. Sharing her mission with others, Nelvia has been featured on WBTV, WCNC, Yahoo Finance, WCCB, and a special on WSOC with notable anchor Brittney Johnson. “I’m just on a mission to help people, and when I actually get paid for the work, it’s just icing on the cake,” Nelvia tells us.
Nelvia’s passion for helping others extends beyond her career, including her involvement in membership-based organizations such as Women’s Impact Fund, Jack and Jill of America, Good Friends Charlotte, Charlotte Crown Realist Association—and several other noteworthy causes she volunteers for and supports.
Michelle Obama is Nelvia’s self-described ‘go-to hero’. “As a Black woman seeking to break barriers in a very crowded space, Michelle is a constant reminder of how to pursue your passions, fulfill boundless potential, and be unapologetic—simultaneously,” Nelvia notes.
Nelvia’s go-getter personality is evident in her life outside of work as well. Pre-COVID-19, she and Todd were jet-setters. “My husband and I live for bucket list experiences,” she says. “We once cruised the Nile River and hired an Egyptologist to teach us about pyramids, artifacts, and cultural norms.” The dynamic duo’s travels have led them to Paris, Turkey, Greece, Mexico, St. Lucia, and Nicaragua. Post-COVID-19, the Bullocks enjoy favorite local destinations, as well as hiking, foodie scenes, festivals, and creating new memories with one another.
Looking into the future, Nelvia plans to leave a legacy behind for her children and grandchildren. “Legacy wealth is built upon five types of capital: social, cultural, intellectual, spiritual, and financial,” she explains. “My long-term goal is to build a strong, turn-key real estate income that can be passed down to my children and generations to come.”
Also looking after the future of Costello REI, Nelvia shares with us her vision as Director of Culture: “Developing a roadmap for agents that will increase reach and impact, and creating a vehicle of empowerment that furthers an agent’s professional and personal growth would come full circle in achieving success while living our company values.”
Among all her accolades and success, Nelvia is REAL. She faces uncertainties and moments of doubt as everyone else. What makes her REAL is her ability to share her experiences, and how she stands up to overcome obstacles.
