“The key to success is to start before you are ready.”
Caten Murphy is one gal who loves her North Carolina roots. After venturing away to college at the University of Alabama and exploring the Amalfi coast through a semester abroad program, Caten always felt her heart calling her back near her hometown of Mooresville, NC.
For Caten, strong family ties and an interest in starting a business with her family led her to choose real estate as a career early on. Caten shares, “Real estate was my first career out of college. The summer before my senior year of college, I got my real estate license in case I chose to take the leap and not follow the corporate path into a marketing (my major) job. I had always had a passion for homes and design, and I knew I’d love the real estate world. That same summer, my family and I got into real estate investing and started our redevelopment company, Maverick Property Group, flipping houses and building a portfolio of short and long-term rentals. I quickly realized real estate brokerage went hand in hand with our investment business (and was a ton of fun!), so I started actively helping others buy and sell homes as well.”
Caten started her career with Keller Williams in 2019, and she and her mom (also a REALTOR®) formed their team, Murphy Home Group. In November of 2019, the duo learned about the opportunity that eXp Realty presents to build a business with several unique revenue streams—and knew they couldn’t pass it up! With a two-year career volume of $12,274,310 and with last year’s volume at $8,194,240, Caten is quickly moving upwards in her career goals.
When asked about whom she looks up to within the industry, Murphy noted both mom and dad:
“I have always looked up to my mom, Lara Murphy. She worked in new home sales as I was growing up, and I remember going to the model homes with her and watching her dedication as she worked with clients to find their dream homes. I thought she had the coolest job in the world. My dad, Tom Murphy, is one of my other biggest role models. He was one of the driving forces to starting our real estate investment company, Maverick Property Group. His ‘why not’ attitude led me to real estate, and I will always be grateful!”
Caten notes her biggest passion in the business right now is educating home buyers and sellers on making the process of real estate fun. “It’s especially rewarding to be a resource to friends who are buying their first homes by educating them on how to invest in their futures through real estate,” she tells us.
When not working, Caten loves to spend time with her fiancé, Joe Jablonski. The two met in college and are planning a Fall 2021 wedding. They love being with their families, friends, and their two dogs, Winnie and Piper. Caten’s family still lives on the farm where she and her sister, Ellie, grew up in Mooresville with their horses, donkey, and dogs.
When asked about success, Caten shares, “Success to me is being able to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want. I don’t think it’s about making the most money or having the most prominent name, but about waking up and going to bed with a smile on your face because you feel happy and fulfilled with what you’ve done in between—for yourself and others.”
Caten loves to mentor up-and-coming agents who are passionate about building their business and advises: “Take some time and understand yourself and your strengths, and then build your business around that. The cool part about entrepreneurship is there is no one way to build a business. Also, the entrepreneurial world can feel crazy at times; learn to rest and lean in on the things that make you happy!”
