As a third-generation Charlottean, Matthew Means is a connoisseur of the city. As a top-producing REALTOR®, Matthew is an expert on using the housing market to build generational wealth. By educating people on how the system works and increasing market access, Matthew closed on $25 million last year and helped many of his clients accomplish the American Dream.

“Our tax laws are written to favor real estate, but a lot of people don’t understand the system or are afraid to jump in,” Matthew explains. “We should be teaching 6- and 7-year-olds financial literacy in school. Until then, REALTORS® have a vested interest in reaching out to underserved communities and showing people how to build wealth through real estate. We need all of our citizens in the fold if we want Charlotte to be the best city that it can be.”

Coupled with his outgoing nature, Matthew’s love of Charlotte is primarily why he chose real estate over law school after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006. “I wanted a career where I could engage the community, interact with people, and tangibly help without having to sit behind a desk all day,” he says. “I started in new home sales and was fortunate to work for a company full of professional agents who were willing to take me under their wing and teach me what I needed to know.”

Today, Matthew is paying it forward as a general broker. “Real estate is by far the best deal going, and educating a client on how to start on the right path can have a butterfly effect that ripples through exponential lives,” he says. “Everybody should be receiving this knowledge, especially those who have historically been outside of the system. It wasn’t that long ago when we were redlining people out of neighborhoods. A lot of work needs to be done to affect meaningful change, but it can start by simply reaching out to someone you might not typically reach out to and sharing what you know.”

Educating clients is Matthew’s first step. Being of service and adding value to every transaction immediately follow. From mortgage lenders to moving companies, cleaners to contractors, Matthew knows the right person to help his clients with any of their real estate needs. In fact, he’s known for using his extensive connections in Charlotte to help out with just about anything—like getting an impossible dinner reservation for a client who forgot his anniversary. That’s the kind of “above-and-beyond” service that drives referrals Matthew’s way.

During his 15-year real estate career, Matthew has consistently earned the #1 spot at multiple agencies. In 2017, he joined Savvy + Company and continued the tradition. “I have a lot of respect for the owners, Lexi Longstreet and Shonn Ross,” he says. “It’s a great fit because, like me, the firm is hyper-local and prides itself on knowing the comings and goings of the area. Charlotte is one of the best cities in America, and I love diving into the nuts and bolts with clients and showing them why the biggest investment of their life will work out for them here. Understanding the past and present of a neighborhood is the best way to predict its future. I use that knowledge to help clients make decisions strategically, and when you make people money, they call you back. I’ve had clients buy five and six homes with me, turning several of them into million-dollar-property owners. My formula works, and it can be life-changing.”

In his free time, Matthew loves to watch Charlotte sports. He’s a big Panthers and Hornets fan, and he’s excited to get season tickets to Charlotte FC, the new Major League Soccer team. Matthew is also into fashion, practicing yoga, and working out. “I love to be active, especially outside,” he says. “I’m also a huge foodie who enjoys good company, and I’m a member of the Arts and Science Council, the Mint Museum, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. But my biggest passion is real estate. I own several rental properties, and I’m always looking for opportunities to expand my portfolio. I like sharing my personal experience with clients who may be nervous about jumping into the unknown. It’s almost impossible to lose in the Charlotte market. My goal is to set clients up to win, build wealth, and accomplish their dreams.”
