Heather and Brad Cook Are Growing Two-Fold!
Written by: Heather Pluard
A team of two is the perfect number for Heather and Brad Cook. Three years after launching Cook and Company, this dynamic duo is on Charlotte’s Top 100 list and putting up numbers usually seen by mega teams. Last year, they sold $22 million together. This year, they’re not letting the pandemic slow them down.
“We had 18 houses under contract during the lockdown,” says Heather. “When COVID-19 hit, we had the choice of staying home and bingeing Netflix together or keep working. We didn’t skip a beat. We did make sure to abide by Mecklenburg County guidelines when showing properties, though. We always try to put ourselves in our client’s spot, and we enter every transaction as if those are our real-life dollars going into a home.”
The two met in Charlotte four years ago, after Brad moved here from Minnesota. “We talked for hours on our first date,” smiles Heather. “It was causal and perfect, with carryout pizza and two Redbox movies in Brad’s apartment. We discussed everything, including work. I had recently left a mega team and gone out on my own, and Brad was interested in the real estate industry even though his career was in legal sales.”
That long conversation eventually led to marriage and joint careers. Heather made the move to join Better Homes and Gardens Realty as an independent REALTOR®. “I wanted a chance to launch,” she says. “Real estate is about making relationships, and to do that, you have to be yourself. I used to work in an office where anything other than 3-inch heels was snubbed. Now I show up to meetings the same way my clients do, in jeans and a smile. Coming to BHBG was like taking a soul bath.”
During Heather’s professional transition, Brad started taking real estate classes in anticipation of joining her. “I was traveling two weeks out of every month and wanted a change,” he says. “It was a risk to leave my career with its guaranteed income and full benefits to dive into real estate, where my earning potential was 100 percent on me, but it was worth it!”
In 2017, Brad got both a real estate license and a marriage license. After his wedding to Heather, they formed Cook and Company and sold $10 million their first year. “We love working together,” says Heather. “It’s not like we divide and conquer. Our clients get both of us. We go to listing appointments and showings together, and we’re both available to them. We typically respond to a text within 30 seconds. Our clients should always feel like they are the only ones. That’s our definition of a first-class experience.”
After hiring a closing coordinator in their second year, Heather and Brad had more time to work and increased their sales to $17 million. Last year, they turned off all company-generated leads and proceeded to have their best year yet. They did it by relying on referrals, supporting local businesses, and increasing their social-media presence.
“Heather has always had a tremendous sphere of influence,” says Brad. “And her creativity on social media has raised our online profile. She shares our real lives and also tells great stories about our clients when they purchase a home. We aim to make new friends at the end of every transaction.”
One way they do that is by inviting past clients over for steaks on the grill. It’s always a full house when they come! Heather and Brad have a blended family with four kids, two cats, and six dogs. “I’m lucky Brad loves animals as much as I do,” Heather laughs. “He’s so much fun. I convinced him we needed another puppy when coronavirus hit, and we got our second Great Dane. We’re both highly involved in animal rescue organizations.”
Off the clock, Heather and Brad enjoy simple date nights together – much like their very first one. “We’ll grab carryout or take the dogs for a walk,” smiles Brad. “Heather is everything to me, and she gives me her everything. She’s the best partner and best friend I could ever ask for. We’ve thought about hiring more people to our team, but we like it as just the two of us. We won’t ever stop.”
