Fairytales really do come true, especially when working with Genevieve Williams in the 28205 area. This Owner/Broker/REALTOR® of Genevieve Williams Real Estate loves helping clients make the best move for the next chapter in their life. Today, she and her team are on track to finish the year with $25 million in sales and some of the happiest clients in the zip code.
“It’s not about selling the house,” Genevieve says. “It’s about asking clients what they are hoping for. What is the story they want for their life with the home they will buy? Real estate is a huge investment. Moving is a big transition in life. We try to build relationships with clients to understand who they are, what they want to do, and what their dreams are for their families. I couldn’t do my job well if we were just in it for the sale.”
A Jacksonville, Florida native, Genevieve attended Elon University and fell in love with North Carolina, where she also met her soon-to-be husband, Adam. They both obtained real estate licenses right after graduation, but Genevieve spent her first three years selling in Florida, while Adam started his own commercial real estate firm in Charlotte. After the couple got engaged, Genevieve moved back to North Carolina and started selling new homes for Fortune 500 builders.
“I was the sales girl in the model home,” she smiles. “It was a great job to have right out of college because it came with a lot of benefits, and I could learn more about selling real estate. But I was laid off when the recession hit in 2008. That’s when I decided to go into general brokerage at a small firm in town.”
Starting her career in a recession wasn’t ideal, but Genevieve was happy to be her own boss. She also developed a tremendous work ethic. “To be an agent who can handle any amount of volume and be successful, you can never be away from your phone,” she says. “You have to figure that out early if you want to survive. I sold $3 million my first year because I’m always on. I’ve taken calls in Paris, on my 10th wedding anniversary trip to Napa, and on boats in the middle of Florida. Basically, everywhere.”
Knowing her potential, Genevieve started her own firm two years ago. She opened Genevieve Real Estate in the Plaza Midwood area, a zip code she lives in and loves. “You’re not entirely your own boss if you’re at another firm, and I wanted to forge my own path,” she says. “I knew I wanted to stay hyper-local and offer my clients an insanely smooth process. I treat my clients like friends and family, and they often become friends and like family to me.”
With high standards for both service and knowledge, Genevieve built a team she is proud of. “My firm is small for a reason,” she says. “I only hire for my assistant position, then I teach and train them until they’re ready to be a full-time agent who serves clients the same way I do. We are hands-on and respond immediately. My best tip for anyone wanting to get into the industry is to find a heavy hitter you can work for and learn from. This business is not easy.”
To relax, Genevieve loves to be with Adam and their two sons—Ash (8) and Austin (6). “Life is busy,” Genevieve says. “A lot of times, we just let the kids run around in the yard and casually entertain friends and family. A nice glass of wine goes great with pizza! We’re looking forward to getting back to sports, travel, and live music once things get back to normal.”
In the meantime, Genevieve will continue to help her clients find their happily ever after. “Since I live in the same area as they do, I run into clients every day at school drop-off, the grocery store, or out in the neighborhood,” she says. “This isn’t just a business to me. It’s part of my life, and I see my clients as being with me for a lifetime.” The end!
