We have two words for you: Patients and patience.
Turns out this month’s cover realtor knows a lot about both. And given that, RE/MAX Executive REALTOR Debe Maxwell knows a lot about something we truly value here at Charlotte Real Producers – people.

RE/MAX Executive REALTOR® Debe Maxwell’s trajectory into the real estate industry was slightly unconventional. While real estate certainly wasn’t a planned career path, she has drawn upon her experience in medicine over the years to make the profession her own and propel herself to the top of the leaderboard.
Debe graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1984 with a degree in nursing. She immediately joined the workforce, becoming a trauma nurse with Carolinas Medical Center – Main (now Atrium Health) near uptown Charlotte.
After 15 years with CMC, she decided to retire, and, with the support of her husband Ray, become a stay-at-home mom to their two sons, Matthew and Ryan. Her days quickly transitioned from tackling multiple emergencies and treating patients, to assisting with school functions and coordinating extracurricular activities.
While Debe loved spending time with her children, she longed for something more.
A friend who was flipping houses for a living suggested Debe assist her with a couple of projects. The pair spent their days identifying properties, cleaning them up, and prepping them for sale. Debe enjoyed the process, especially finding the elusive “diamonds in the rough,” and decided to become a full-time real estate agent. She got her license in 2004.
Since that time, Debe has steadily made a name for herself in the Charlotte market. So much so, that last quarter, 100 percent of her transactions were generated by repeat and referral business – a statistic of which she is extremely proud.
“Our team didn’t have to sacrifice anything to achieve that goal,” she says. “All we had to do was take care of our clients and love on them. It was that simple.”
The high-quality care Debe extends to her clients can be seen and felt in each of her transactions. Her attentive, “white glove” service approach can be traced back to her previous life as a nurse – when she regularly focused on addressing her patients’ needs.
“The home buying process isn’t that much different than a trauma room,” explains Debe. “Multiple inspections must be performed, decisions must be made, and the ability to remain calm under pressure is vital … because let’s face it, the closing table can be surrounded by tension at times, agreed?”
As a result, Debe strives to make her clients feel supported and comfortable throughout each step of the process. To accomplish this, she makes herself accessible 24/7. “Communication is the cornerstone of this industry,” says Debe. “I want my clients to know that if they need to get a hold of me for whatever reason, they can.”
Making clients a priority has helped Debe earn the title of top producer in the Charlotte market. Last year, her four-person team achieved approximately $20 million in sales, and the group is on track to earn a little over that same amount in 2019. An impressive accomplishment, considering Debe is the only full-time selling agent on the team.
But for Debe, a 34-year Charlottean, her job isn’t necessarily about the numbers or even about the money. It’s about the people and the happiness she brings into their lives after the deal is done.
“My favorite part about being a REALTOR® is visiting my clients’ homes after closing and seeing what they’ve done with the house to make it their own,” she explains. “I get such joy from hearing them go on and on about how much they love their new home, the neighborhood, their neighbors… even their commute! I often think to myself in those moments, ‘we got it right; we got everything right.’”
Debe’s ability to bring positivity into the lives of others extends beyond her career. Each year, her team hosts a “warm and toasty” event to support the Humane Society of Charlotte, asking guests to bring blankets and cushions
for the dogs to sleep on in the shelter. They participate in the AdoptaPlatoon program each year, sending gift boxes filled with goodies to participating troops; and the group regularly gives to the Metrolina Food Bank.
Of the three charities her team supports, one is especially close to her heart – AdoptaPlatoon – as her father and brother are both retired from the U.S. Air Force. Growing up in a military family made Debe into the woman she is today – someone who is highly motivated, successful, and regimented. She says these traits helped her get her real estate business off the ground when she first started.
“Everything has a place in the military; it’s highly organized,” she explains. “Individuals looking to break into real estate need to embrace the structure this industry demands by building a database. It should include your contacts – include people you see at the YMCA, at your church, in the neighborhood, or where you volunteer. Make this database your sphere and work your sphere. You’ll be amazed at the results it generates.”
Helping others, whether that means mentoring a fellow agent on how to succeed in real estate or helping a client achieve their real estate goals by keeping the home buying process moving in the right direction, is in Debe’s DNA.
“All buyers want to do is land their dream home. It doesn’t have to be a fight to win,” she explains. “So if the seller needs to be given something to feel as though they’ve won, then I’ll do it. I’m always open to finding a solution that will work for everyone involved.”
Debe files these more challenging moments away at the end of each day and uses them to her advantage with the next client. Says Debe, “I strive to improve daily. If I can walk away with a lesson to learn from every experience, it enables me to grow and improve as a person so I can better
help others tomorrow.”
Spoken like a true nurse. I mean, top-producing REALTOR®.
