By Charlotte Top Producers |Sep 9, 2019

They’ve been named one of Charlotte’s Best Places to Work by the Charlotte Business Journal for the past five years; they’ve earned the “National Housing Quality Gold Award” – (that’s homebuilding’s highest award); and they’ve been recognized as “Charlotte’s Builder of the Year” by the Charlotte HBA three times. Let’s be honest – Classica Homes is doing something right. Learn more from Classica Homes CEO Bill Saint in this month’s #SponsorSpotlight article!

I had the opportunity to meet with Owner, President, and CEO of Classica Homes, Bill Saint, to gain insight into this innovative builder and their spectacular communities. Classica Homes designs and builds remarkable homes and neighborhoods, for the luxury buyer in the $500,000-$900,000+ price range.

Welcoming me into the warm and inviting office off of Ayrsley Town Blvd., Bill gave me a tour of the office as well as the modern and spacious design studio conveniently located onsite. Meeting his wife, Terri, who is the VP of Design and champion behind the home plans, design inspiration and complete model home design and furnishings, I could see the synergy that created Classica Homes glowing between them.

Both Bill and Terri share a love of home design and building. Bill recalls, “I started my career in public accounting as a CPA, after graduating from the University of Michigan. Terri, my wife, started her career in physical therapy, also graduating from the University of Michigan. I knew I loved being involved in helping businesses grow and operate, but wanted to find an industry I loved. From our first years together dating in high school and throughout college, we couldn’t drive by an open house or new community without pulling in to tour the models and see the home design.”

However, both of them hadn’t given a thought to making their passion a career at that point. Life’s opportunity, however, would place home building on the radar for Bill.  The couple had relocated from Plymouth, Michigan to Charlotte when Bill received a call from a recruiter. Coincidentally, the position was for a controller for a large national homebuilder.

Bill recalls, “I knew I loved homes, and it sounded like an industry I might enjoy. Little did I know that would turn into an opportunity to become part of a privately-held custom builder in Charlotte, where I grew from the CFO role into the position of President after 14 years. During this time Terri became involved with the business, creating the Design Studio and working with clients to design their homes.”

With the downturn of 2010, the company closed, which opened an opportunity for Bill and Terri. Together, they started Classica Homes. With 16 of their former team members jumping aboard, Classica Homes was off to a great start in delivering the most remarkably designed homes and neighborhoods as well as providing an exceptional experience and value to their customers.

Classica Homes has unique renderings and floor plans which make them stand out from the rest of the local builders. Bill and Terri sought out an architect who could make their visions a reality. Bill notes, “We toured the country looking for the best homes and found arguably the best architect, Bassenian-Lagoni in Newport Beach, CA. They are probably the most awarded architectural firm in America, and we developed a partnership and friendship together, which remains to this day. Working together, they design each home in our collection and make every plan truly amazing.”

Reviewing floor plans with Bill as we chatted, I have to agree that the buyer selection process is a real treat! I was tickled to see how I could go online to the Classica Homes site and pick a plan to make my own. With a click of the mouse, I was able to add a closet here, change a bathroom there, and tweak the design plan to make it just like I wanted. It was amazing!

Bill agreed with my assessment, noting, “We love to have fun and love what we do, and it transfers to each buyer having a great time as they choose their floor plan, make all the design selections and watch their dream be built.”

Bill credits the success of creating Classica Homes to the contributions of both he and Terri. “Looking back, we realized our passion for incredible home design and building great business teams, was our calling together.”

The motto for the company is: “Live Different. Live Fully. Live Inspired. Love Home.” Bill explains: “It really means we want to pass the joy of transforming your life with an exceptionally designed home and have a ton of fun in the process of creating it, and a lifetime of living in a neighborhood and home that feels unlike any other.”

Sharing Classica Homes’ amazing communities with REALTOR® partners is of utmost importance in daily operations. Bill loves working with REALTOR® partners and Trade partners, and shares, “Partnering is what we value most. None of us at Classica Homes hammer a nail or move the dirt. It is our hundreds of Trade Partners who craft our homes with love and incredible quality that makes them great. It is our REALTOR® Partners who help us sell over $40 million of homes each year to transform their clients’ lives. We love working together with REALTORS® and couldn’t do this without them.”

When asked about what he finds most fulfilling in working with Classica Homes today, Bill explains, “Talking with a new homeowner and hearing the joy in their voice when they discuss living in a Classica neighborhood and home. I love hearing them rave about our Team and how much fun they had building a home, or in the case of buying a spec home already built, how it has transformed their life.”

Classica Homes understands changes in market trends and how they affect customer perceptions. The drive is to make homes more customized, offering more choices for the many different ways people want to live. One key is the outdoor living aspect. “Bringing in outdoor living as a true extra ‘room’ of the home – blurring the line between living indoors or out in your home – is key,” says Bill. “We fulfill the need to make this customized choice an easy process and develop and use systems to offer more value and make the steps of designing and building easy and fun. This involves utilizing technology to show how a home will live, systems to track and price the thousands of custom choices, making selection easy, and providing tools for seamless communication to our homeowners each step of the way. We also use these tools to share information with our Trade Partners and REALTORS®, so everyone is on the same page.”

Two of the newest Classica Homes communities are Arden Mill in Fort Mill, SC and The Reserve at Washam Potts in Cornelius. Arden Mill is a quaint and timeless neighborhood with four models to walk through and an ideal location in the growing Fort Mill area, just across from the new elementary school (under construction) and new high school. The Reserve at Washam Potts is spectacular in the Lake Norman area with walking distance to restaurants and shops.

With the growth of Classica Homes booming, I was curious as to what Bill’s vision of success is to drive this dream. He reflected, “It’s all about seeing your Team deliver incredible care for our homebuyers, and seeing the smile on our customer’s face when they talk about building with Classica. Helping our Team grow in their career and personal goals. As well, for our employees, we strive to create a great place to not only work but be with your second ‘family.’ We see success as being a part of the Charlotte landscape in building beautiful neighborhoods and homes which transform lives.”

Bill’s actions match his words with his leadership at Classica Homes. Being named one of Charlotte’s Best Places to Work (Charlotte Business Journal) for the past five years, earning the “National Housing Quality Gold Award” (homebuilding’s highest award), and being recognized as “Charlotte’s Builder of the Year” by the Charlotte HBA three times are accolades which stand behind Bill’s drive to create beautiful living areas as well as a positive work environment for the Team that makes the magic happen.

Wonder what Bill and Terri do in their spare time away from Classica Homes? With their three passions being their family, Classica, and boating, they spend their free time together with their son, 23, and daughter, 19. They love the water and boating, but they still can’t resist “walking into as many new homes for inspiring ideas across the country as possible – usually over 100 per year!”

No wonder Classica Homes is as innovative and enticing a builder as it is with this drive and leadership at its helm!
