It’s no surprise that Christine Hotham, Broker/Realtor with Helen Adams Realty and Hotham homes is pushing a 23 M volume in 2019. This woman is all heart and hustle, not to mention one of the kindest people you could meet! Get to know her more in our December issue!

It’s not uncommon for Christine Hotham to go above and beyond- she’s the neighbor and friend who you can count on to give you a warm greeting, invite you out to catch up, or refer a handyman when you have a home question. A loving mother, wife, and fabulous friend and neighbor, Christine Hotham is the epitome of a welcoming friend. I was impressed, but not so much surprised knowing her dutiful nature, when she told me she was up after 11 PM at a clients’ home the night before pouring water in buckets to
ensure the sump pump was working up to par.

She had stopped in at our local nail salon to get a quick fill and we were able to chat a minute before she had to dash off to another client showing. With this energy and tenacity, it’s no wonder Christine was voted “Best REALTOR®” in South Charlotte Weekly not one, but three years in a row! With $23 million in sales in 2018, Christine is a driving force in the real estate market from South Charlotte to Myers Park and surrounding areas.

Christine is a valued part of the Helen Adams Realty Ballantyne office. She has achieved many accolades during her past six years within the group. Her accomplishments include being awarded Diamond Level Sales Leader 2016, 2017, 2018, Top Sales Leader – Ballantyne Office 2016, 2017, 2018, Platinum Customer Service Award 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, Platinum Level Sales Leader 2015, and Gold Level Sales Leader 2014. Christine was even named “Rising Star” by The Charlotte Observer Home Design 2016.

From rising star to top performer, how does she do it? Meeting Christine for a coffee early one morning, I had the opportunity for a longer chat to discover her background and passion for real estate that has made her the success she is today.

Growing up in Maryland just outside Washington D.C, Christine had parents who were successful REALTORS®. It’s in her blood. “I was (my mom) Barbara’s assistant,” she laughs, “I would spread out maps to show routes to show homes, type letters, stuff envelopes… all of the things before the age of smartphones and GPS navigations.” Christine had customer service skills ingrained in her from a young age as well as a great sense of business acumen. In college at Penn State University, she obtained a Finance degree as well as an MBA from Villanova. Working with fortune 500 companies such as GE and Oracle, she has been in the shoes of the auditor as well as controller. Leaving corporate life to have more flexibility, Christine even had a home design business. With her amazing experience, it’s no wonder that she can easily make sense of all the financials and details involved in one of life’s largest purchases—a new home.

Her financial savvy and industry knowledge are to the benefit of her clients as well. Her keen eye for project management can save sellers tons in terms of making improvements that will yield the purchase price sought for their home. She has a network of trade partners who can remodel, paint, update and accessorize for a listing to ensure sellers maintain their investment value. “I had a listing that was sitting and the seller wanted to lower the price by $5000. I advised him instead of lowering the listing price, to invest in the home’s condition with new paint, new carpet where needed, and to add staging. With painting ($1500), new carpet ($2800), and accessories and staging ($500), we were able to give a fresh look to the home. Four days after updates were completed on a Wednesday, the seller was under contract at his asking price on that Saturday.”

Christine knows what works and what sells in this hot market. No need to lower prices when a few touch-ups are all you need to move the property at its true worth.

“Light, Bright, and Ready” – These actions are ones that Christine Holtham lives by in all her listings. “I always have a blower in my car, repair kit, screwdriver, picture hangers, etc. to handle any minor home issues that come up to detract from the potential buyer’s first impression- it’s like a first date. I like to see the entryways debris-free and welcoming with potted flowers or plants.”

“As well, my listing goal is to draw the potential buyers in so I like it to be a blank palette for the eyes with no unnecessary clutter. I tell my sellers to minimize, to think ‘model home’ as potential buyers want to be able to envision it as their new home. Move-in-Ready is the goal,” explains Christine.

Asked about how she is so successful, Christine shares, “I’m a big believer to do what you know. I love working Myers Park and south to Ballantyne and into Union County, Weddington, and Waxhaw areas. If I’m not an expert in an area, I will refer out to an agent. I give my all to my clients and being an expert in your area is key to being the best help and service provider to your customers.”

Blending personal and business life comes naturally to Christine—she is a pivotal person in our Ballantyne Country Club and South Charlotte community. Working out of Helen Adams’ Ballantyne office, her efforts are supported by licensed agent, Theresa Kistler, full-time assistant, Kaitlin MacBain, and marketing director, Linda Chase. Linda works on a contract basis with local publications to ensure Christine’s presence is reaching audiences through various channels of media. With a network of support, Christine can spend time with her husband, Scott, and sons, Kyle {21} and Jack {18}.

“When I worked in the corporate world, I had the kids with nannies. Having flexibility in my scheduling is key to balancing my work and family to everyone’s benefit,” Christine tells us.

Volunteering is a passion for Christine as well-she has been active with Ballantyne Country Club Rally for the Cure, PTA, as well as the local YMCA. She is a very active and spirited tennis player as well as a golfing enthusiast.

Traveling is a great way to recharge and reconnect as well. Christine loves to go to her family’s lake house in Smith Mountain Lake, VA. The family loves to jaunt abroad as well. They have been to England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. When asked where to next, Christine was excited for a family trip to Croatia.

When asked about her biggest strengths in helping her clients, Christine shared, “I value my clients and I’m always available to help in any and all ways to make the process seamless and smooth. I have a trusted group of vendors that allow me to source cost-effective home improvements to ensure maximum and top value for the homes I list for sellers.”

Christine is a model of success in every way. However, the biggest takeaway from our chatting, is that even with all the hustle and bustle of managing a $23-million-dollar volume of business this year, she is still approachable, kind, and a great neighbor and friend to have.
